1.
京の五条の橋の上
(だい)のおとこの弁慶は
長い薙刀
(なぎなた)ふりあげて
牛若めがけて切りかかる


On the Kyo Gojo Bridge stood Benkei, he was the strongest man
He waited there for someone to test his mighty arm
Just then came Ushiwaka, he was the handsomest man
Benkei threw down a challenge with his long naginata sword



2.
牛若丸は飛びのいて
持った扇
(おうぎ)を投げつけて
来い来い来いと欄干
(らんかん)
上へあがって手を叩く


Ushiwaka-Maru quickly jumped aside
And threw his paper fan right in the face of the man
Now here was a brave man! He jumped to the bridge railing
And stood there clapping his hands



3.
前やうしろや右左
ここと思えばまたあちら
(つばめ)のような早業(はやわざ)
鬼の弁慶あやまった


He leaned back, jumped aside, feinted right and left
Lightly and swiftly moving now here and quickly there
Seeing his excellent footwork, his swallow-swift display
Benkei, the devil of a man, to the young man gave way
